The Truth About Resume Advice

One of the most common complaints I hear is there is too much conflicting resume advice. And you’re right, there is. But there are 2 big things to keep in mind about all of the conflicting advice.

  1. There is no such thing as a perfect resume, which means….

  2. Most resume advice is simply someone’s opinion being presented as a hard fact.

I read hundreds of resumes a week…literally hundreds, and here are some resume types I have moved forward:

  • 1 Page Resumes

  • 2 Page Resumes

  • 3 Page Resumes

  • Resumes with 1 column

  • Resumes without multiple columns

  • PDF resumes

  • Word resumes

  • Resumes with Summaries or objectives or Skills Sections

  • Resumes without Summaries or Objectives or Skills Sections

Do you get the point?

I can not stress enough, that the things people argue about everyday on the internet for clout DO NOT MATTER nearly as much as the content inside of your resume!

Actual recruiters, who do the actual job of reading resumes and making decisions on who moves forward are looking for resumes that show off your ability to do the job.

The other stuff are things that are easy to focus on in a bad job market when you’re looking for answers.

Content is king when it comes to a resume and it always will be! I have moved forward resumes that break every rule the gurus love to tell you and I have rejected resumes that follow every rule…and that’s because There are no rules!

  • Read the job description

  • Ensure you are showing off your achievements and skills in the areas the JD is asking for

  • Focus on making your resume easy to read and understand quickly to the human eye, consider things like white space, font size and if your eyes are being drawn to the most important information first.

  • Send the resume and understand that in this market sometimes that still is not enough sadly.

That’s it. That’s the resume advice. The rest is just someone’s personal opinion being passed off as objective fact…many times by someone who does not even screen resumes for a living.

Stop stressing about the things recruiters really don’t care about and just focus on great content relevant to the job you are applying for. If it doesn’t have an impact on you being good at this job…then it probably can go or be changed.

P.S. Keyword matching and resume matching tools like Teal can be really helpful at making great content designed for the specific job. While this newsletter is not sponsored by them and I was not compensated to mention this, I do receive a small monetary benefit at no cost to you if you sign up for the free service using that link and want to disclose that in the interest of always being real with you.

However I used Teal on my own job search and constantly tell people how helpful it is at both keeping your search organized and tailored to the right roles and do recommend it, especially if you’re struggling with your resume or landing interviews.

While I have gotten busy and temporarily took down my coaching, I have reopened some coaching with a much more limited schedule. I continue to keep my coaching rates below many coaches with less experience in an effort to be as accessible as possible.

We can meet for 30 or 60 minutes to go over any part of your job search including resume review or job interview prep.

As always, I will continue to offer lots of free content, I have coaching as an available option for those who want some 1 on 1 time, but those of you who follow me know that I will never make a hard sell or push it on you.

I’d love to answer your question in an upcoming issue. Submit any questions you’d like me to discuss here.

In a final exciting note, I have finally launched my Youtube Page. At the moment it is just a few older videos I have uploaded, but I will soon be posting more long form content there. Subscribe to my page here as I continue to grow it.

I’m also aware there is a broken youtube link that is at the bottom of this email every week, I have tried everything to fix it, but it just won’t seem to go away! Use the link I just shared with you instead.
